In het begin was er Laurent Leemans, zanger van het folkrockcombo Ceilí Moss van 1996 tot 2015 en van de arty-new wave band La Vierge du Chancelier Rolin in de jaren 90. In 2012 werd het verlangen om liedjes die hun plaats niet hadden gevonden in het repertoire van zijn groepen uiteindelijk sterker dan de angst om de zoveelste domkop op akoestisch gitaar te worden die zijn existentialisme op anderhalf twee akkoorden toetert. Sinds 2012 heeft The Imaginary Suitcase 9 opnames uitgebracht en ongeveer 300 concerten gegeven in België, Frankrijk en Nederland.
Voor 10 jaren streeft The Imaginary Suitcase al naar de perfecte balans tussen helderklare, bijna pop melodieën (denk aan Leonard Cohen, Suzanne Vega...), en een gewillig ruige sound als 16 Horsepower of Hugo Race. Het resultaat? Liedjes opgebouwd rond verfijnde harmonieën tussen de diepe stem van Laurent en de lichtere van Jana, twee even krachtige, tedere, sarcastische, melancholische of woedende maar altijd intense stemmen, bedrieglijk eenvoudige gitaarakkoorden subtiel verlicht door Vincent en vlijmscherpe teksten over leven, dood en het verwarrende momenten tussendoor.

Au commencement, il y avait Laurent Leemans, chanteur du combo folk-rock Ceilí Moss de 1996 à 2015 et du band arty-new wave La Vierge du Chancelier Rolin dans les années 90. Un beau jour de 2012, son envie de faire exister quelques chansons qui n’avaient pas trouvé leur place dans le répertoire de ses groupes finit par devenir plus forte que la hantise de devenir le énième niaiseux à guitare sèche qui ulule son existentialisme sur deux accords et demie. Depuis 2012, The Imaginary Suitcase a sorti 9 enregistrements et joué à peu près 300 concerts en Belgique, France et Pays-Bas.
Depuis 10 ans donc, The Imaginary Suitcase aspire à trouver l’équilibre parfait entre mélodies ligne claire, presque pop (pensez à Leonard Cohen, Suzanne Vega…), et un son volontiers rugueux à la 16 Horsepower ou Hugo Race Le résultat ? Des chansons bâties autour d’harmonies raffinées entre la voix profonde de Laurent et celle plus légère de Jana, deux voix également puissantes, tendres, sarcastiques, mélancoliques ou enragées mais toujours intenses, d'accords de guitare faussement simples délicatement enluminées par Vincent et de paroles écrites à la lame de rasoir sur la vie, la mort et les moments flippants entre les deux.

In the beginning, there was Laurent Leemans, singer of the folk-rock combo Ceilí Moss from 1996 to 2015 and of the arty-new wave band La Vierge du Chancelier Rolin in the 90s. In 2012, the longing to bring to life some songs that had not found their place in the repertoire of his groups ended up becoming stronger than the fear of becoming the umpteenth silly sod on acoustic guitar who hoots his existentialism on two and a half chords. Since 2012, The Imaginary Suitcase has released 9 recordings and performed around 300 concerts in Belgium, France and the Netherlands.
Since 10 years, The Imaginary Suitcase strives to find the perfect balance between clear line, almost pop melodies (think The Civil Wars, or Leonard Cohen meets Suzanne Vega…), and a willingly rough sound reminiscent of 16 Horsepower or Hugo Race. The result? Songs built around refined harmonies between Laurent's deep voice and Jana's lighter one, two equally powerful, tender, sarcastic, melancholic or enraged but always intense voices, deceptively simple guitar chords delicately ornamented by Vincent and razor-sharp lyrics about life, death and the creepy moments in between.
